A young man was appointed to the presidency of a bank at the tender age of 32. The promotion was far beyond his wildest dreams and very frightening to him. So he went to the venerable old chairman of the board to ask for advice on how to become a good bank president. What is the most important thing for me to do as a new president? He asked the older man. Make the right decisions with the gentleman’s terse answer. The young man thought about that for a moment and said, thank you very much, that is very helpful. But can you be a little bit more specific? How do I make right decisions? The wise old man answered, experience. Exasperated, the young president said. But, sir, that is why I’m here, I don’t have the experience. I need to make the right decisions. How do I get experience? The old man’s reply was by making the wrong decisions. Spiritual maturity doesn’t come easily. It usually comes by making a lot of mistakes. Don’t get too discouraged if you’re unable to live the perfect Christian life right now. That’s what commitment is all about. Commitment means that even though you blow it again and again, you hang in there and you keep learning from your mistakes. Don’t give up on Jesus because he never gives up on you. God bless you, Captain Ken Chapman.
